Overview

Pandora at Animal Kingdom is a themed land based on the 2009 science fiction film “Avatar,” directed, written, produced, and co-edited by James Cameron. Much like the movie, the land features larger-than-life features, such as floating mountains and bio-luminescent landscapes. The land contains two rides, (“Flight of Passage” and “Na’vi River Journey”) a retail shop and a dining establishment. The visual language of the land is a blend of indigenous “Na’vi” elements and “Resources Development Administration (RDA), a militarized group seeking to exploit the planet of Pandora for it’s natural resources.

The lighting for Pandora is an intricate blend of architainment lighting solutions, theatrical lighting, special effects lighting, and projection systems. Additionally, UV lighting was used extensively throughout “Na’vi” River Journey” to achieve the bio-luminescent look present in the films. Special effects lighting and heavily-themed lighting fixtures were integrated, tested, and adjusted in the field to ensure proper operation and maintainability. Throughout the CA process, lighting adjustments were made and documented in the field to support the creative vision and respond to the unknowns of new technologies or schedule impacts.
