Overview
I-4 BtU Sand Lake is a civil project developed through 100%DD for Orange County as part of the I-4 "Beyond the Ultimate" expansion at the Sand Lake Road Interchange. The project consisted of internally lighting six concrete and acrylic pylons as a welcome statement and placemaking opportunity for travelers coming to Orlando. The pylon bases were fabricated of concrete, with the upper portions being fabricated out of steel and acrylic.
While the lighting concept is not complex, the lighting coordination and controls aspects were demanding. Studies were performed to estimate the luminance of the structure to avoid competing with traffic signals in the viewshed of motorists. In-office mockups were created and studied to optimize the diode spacing, setback, and acrylic thickness for a solution that is both bright and even. Mounting details were coordinated extensively to ensure the steel structure, acrylic panels, and cable mounting locations were integrated seamlessly. This allowed the lighting system to provide even illumination with no shadows or dark spots.
